Crosswalk Symphony

OBJECTIVE
Choose a city from Italo Calvino’s Invisible Cities and create a video that interprets and reimagines Boston through the lens of that city.
    DESIGN PROCESS

I chose Ersilia from Italo Calvino’s Invisible Cities, a place where relationships are mapped by strings stretched between buildings. I imagined Boston as a similar living web of connections, constantly shifting, quietly holding people together.
I spent a day filming in the city, placing myself in front of various crosswalks and documenting the flow of movement. Later, I reviewed and edited the footage to observe patterns in how strangers mirrored each other’s gestures, and how different intersections subtly echoed one another.
I mapped elements in a crosswalk to digital instruments through Ableton Live, creating an auditory experience that mirrors the fluid and ever-changing dynamics of crosswalks.
